The simultaneous detection of gravitational waves (GWs) from the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, GW170817, and its electromagnetic (EM) counterpart marked the dawn of multi-messenger EMGW astronomy. The scientific impact of such joint observations was extremely rich and among other things, it kicked off the field of GW cosmology. However, this event remains the only success story despite GW discoveries growing steadily over every observing run. I will talk about the challenges in EM follow-up of gravitational waves and efforts to resolve them. I will also talk about a new technique of measuring the Hubble constant using GWs from binary neutron stars in the absence of an EM counterpart.
