An experiment in alternative funding models to enable science readout technologies developed to operate detector arrays for astrophysics share many of the fundamental capabilities required by quantum devices. Whether it's multiplexing for TES detectors with applications to photon-number-resolving in photonics, direct RF readout for mKIDs that can be used to control superconducting qubits, or feedback mechanisms that can be repurposed for quantum error correction. Some technologies used in astrophysics have also reached a technological maturity high enough to begin adoption into industrial or even space-qualified applications. In this talk, I'll discuss the intersection between astrophysics and quantum device instrumentation, and the possibility of using an industrial startup model to enable basic science happening at research institutions. |
