Ever since the discovery of the Integer Quantum Hall Effect and work by Thouless et al, topological materials have played a central role in condensed matter physics. Surprisingly, topological materials are ubiquitous in relativistic quantum field theories as well, and may hold the key to a fundamental understanding of the Standard Model that has so far eluded us. I discuss how parallel developments in the two fields are related and their potential implications for particle physics. |
